V. Raman winning the Noble Prize in Physics. One scientific invention can change the world forever. This year, India is celebrating the National Science Day with the theme &#8211; <em><strong>&#8216;Women in Science&#8217;<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here are 10 amazing women in science from India and across the world who have made a mark with their outstanding discoveries.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ann Tsukamoto \u2013 Stem cell isolation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/sl.sbs.com.au\/public\/image\/file\/d66aa06a-37db-4d61-88a5-a1b931788e8d\" width=\"461\" height=\"309\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the 1990\u2019s, Tsukamoto and her colleagues created\u00a0a significant\u00a0medical breakthrough \u2013 they were\u00a0able to\u00a0identify\u00a0and isolate stem cells. This discovery has been\u00a0important\u00a0to medical advancements,\u00a0as well as\u00a0the development\u00a0of bone marrow transplants to treat blood cancer. Stem cells\u00a0are\u00a0special human cells that have\u00a0the flexibility\u00a0to\u00a0be converted into\u00a0many various\u00a0cell\u00a0types, from muscle cells to brain cells. In some cases, they\u00a0even have\u00a0the flexibility\u00a0to repair\u00a0broken tissues. Their discovery gave people with blood cancer another chance at life and has since saved thousands of lives.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Marie Curie \u2013 Theory of Radioactivity<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mw-mmv-final-image jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/7\/7e\/Marie_Curie_c1920.jpg\/800px-Marie_Curie_c1920.jpg\" alt=\"Marie Curie c1920.jpg\" width=\"323\" height=\"439\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Marie Curie was not only the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, but the first and only woman in history to win it twice. The scientist who discovered polonium and radium, Marie Curie developed the theory of radioactivity, as well as techniques for isolating radioactive isotopes. During World War I, she designed the mobile radiography units used by field hospitals to take X-rays of wounded soldiers.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Indira Hinduja<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"n3VNCb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.biospectrumindia.com\/uploads\/articles\/dr_indira_hinduja_honorary_gynaecologist_ivf_and_infertility_specialist_pd_hinduja_hospital_and_medical_research_centre_mumbai-10547.jpeg\" alt=\"Image result for Indira Hinduja\" width=\"536\" height=\"358\" data-noaft=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>D<strong>r. <\/strong>Indira Hinduja is an Indian gynaecologist, obstetrician and infertility specialist she delivered India&#8217;s s first test-tube baby at KEM Hospital on August 6, 1986. She also pioneered the Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) technique resulting in the birth of India\u2019s first GIFT baby on January 4, 1988.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Shirley Jackson \u2013 Telecommunication research<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/sl.sbs.com.au\/public\/image\/file\/b621d7a6-5734-403b-a84a-6b2cd4dc1c70\" width=\"516\" height=\"338\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Theoretical\u00a0physicist\u00a0Dr. Shirly\u00a0while\u00a0working at\u00a0Bell Laboratories, she conducted breakthrough\u00a0research with subatomic particles. Her research enabled others to invent the portable fax, touch-tone telephone, solar cells, fibre optic cables, and the technology behind caller ID and call waiting. Imagine all the important information we would have missed without this Shirley Jackson!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Asima Chatterjee<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"n3VNCb\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/7\/7d\/Asima_Chatterjee_1.jpg\/220px-Asima_Chatterjee_1.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for asima chatterjee\" width=\"386\" height=\"470\" data-noaft=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Asima Chatterjee was one of the first Indian women to earn a doctorate in science in British India and a highly regarded Indian chemist. Asima Chatterjee is most noted for her research on vinca alkaloids &amp; the development of anti-epileptic &amp; anti-malarial drugs.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Stephanie Kwolek \u2013 Kevlar<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sl.sbs.com.au\/public\/image\/file\/729d21bd-2604-4f79-aaf2-c7ad157088d6\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although this invention from Stephanie Kwolek was an accident, its discovery has helped prevent countless other harmful accidents. Stephanie Kwolek, while looking for new, lightweight plastic to be used in car tires so that they can enjoy better fuel economy, accidentally discovered \u2018 Kevlar\u2019 that is five times stronger than steel. Mary-Claire King teamed up with Allan Wilson, a molecular biology professor, to demonstrate that chimpanzees and humans shared 99% of their DNA. Not only that she used dental genetics to identify 59 children who had been separated from their families due to political strife and thereby saving lives and healing many families. Like others, Tereshkova maintained a flight log &amp; took photographs. These photographs of the horizon from space were later used to identify \u2018Aerosol layers\u2019 within the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Lene Vestergaard Hau<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wikiBioImage\" src=\"https:\/\/alchetron.com\/cdn\/lene-hau-7ca8fe1b-c79e-411d-984a-93be3e78ece-resize-750.jpg\" alt=\"Lene Hau lene hau Tumblr\" width=\"522\" height=\"348\" data-tronimagesrc=\"https:\/\/38.media.tumblr.com\/d35ac89d8babdfe1b6993dfd10b79152\/tumblr_inline_mpvrclZ6XW1qz4rgp.jpg\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hau was the first to stop light, which moves at 186,282 miles per second in a vacuum<a href=\"https:\/\/scientificwomen.net\/women\/hau-lene-126\">.<\/a> In the 1990s Lene Vestergaard Hau focused on developing ultracold gases that would act to slow down beams of light. When she and her team shined a laser through that condensate in 1999, the\u00a0pulse speed dropped\u00a0to about 17 m\/s. Two years later, Lene Vestergaard Hau one-upped herself by stopping light dead in its tracks by using a cloud of sodium atoms cooled to a few billionths of a degree above absolute zero.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Kamala Sohonie<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/9\/99\/Kamala_Sohonie.jpg\/220px-Kamala_Sohonie.jpg\" srcset=\"\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/9\/99\/Kamala_Sohonie.jpg 1.5x\" alt=\"Kamala Sohonie.jpg\" width=\"396\" height=\"468\" data-file-width=\"254\" data-file-height=\"300\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kamala Sohonie discovered that every cell of a plant tissue contained the enzyme \u2018cytochrome C\u2019 which was involved in the oxidation of all plant cells. During her service to science in India, she worked on the effect of vitamins, nutritional aspects of \u2018<em>Neera\u2019 aka Palm Nectar<\/em>. She along with her students worked on three major groups of food items consumed by the rural poor.
